Hymn for Reconciliation: A Transformative Oboe Quartet

2024 Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo Composition Contest Winner

Experience a powerful journey through the heart with "Hymn for Reconciliation"—the laureate piece from the prestigious Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo's 2024 "Call for Chamber Music Compositions Submissions."

About the Piece:

"Hymn for Reconciliation" is a poignant exploration of the intersection of faith and identity, particularly reflecting the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community within Christian churches. This evocative work serves as a testament to the belief that hate has no place in God’s houses and that everyone deserves the right to worship freely without prejudice.

Structure:

Divided into three compelling movements--Confession, Flood, and Rainbow—the piece unfolds:

  • Confession: Seamlessly opens with a hymn-like oboe tune that mirrors the composer’s personal journey of self-acceptance. This section beautifully captures the emotional complexity of coming out, echoing the young composer’s heartfelt confession to his mother.
  • Flood: A powerful allusion to the Biblical Flood, this movement conveys the overwhelming waves of hate and despair that vulnerable queer youth often face. The music envelops listeners in an immersive experience, reflecting feelings of self-doubt and isolation.
  • Rainbow: This uplifting finale symbolizes the hope and love that affirming clergy and supportive families can provide. Drawing from the imagery of God’s covenant with Noah, it reaffirms the belief that love transcends all boundaries, encouraging individuals to rediscover their faith in a positive light.

Why You Should Perform This Work:

"Hymn for Reconciliation" transcends mere notes on a page; it is a call to embrace love and inclusivity in worship. It invites musicians and audiences alike to engage in a collective experience of healing and acceptance. In a world yearning for compassion, this piece conveys a profound message, echoed through its lush harmonies and intricate interplay within the oboe quartet.

Let the voices of your ensemble sing out the message that love and faith can coexist, as the music resonates with the timeless words of Ephesians 5:19:

"[speak] to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart..."

Join us in celebrating unity through music, where each note becomes a step towards a more inclusive future!
