About the Monetary Value of the Program
As mentioned earlier, the program is a unique and exclusive opportunity, offered FREE to all accepted participants. However, it's important to note that each event incurs actual costs. To provide a clear picture of the value you'll be receiving, we've broken down the participant-associated cost of the program into specific items.
Please note that this price does not include the cost of housing and local transportation for participants who may require such assistance. We are committed to making our program equally accessible for all accepted participants regardless of their geographic area. Except for the transportation from their home address to the place of the program's events, we will assist with any needs related to active participants' participation at all offered events.
About the Real Value of the Program
The covered cost and the financial reward are pleasant aspects of the program; however, each accepted participant will receive much more. Once accepted into the program, you or your ensemble will be prominently featured on our website and social media accounts to acknowledge your acceptance. At the final concert, after you finish the program, you will receive a valuable certificate acknowledging your successful participation. Each participant will receive a permanent place on our website. You will be forever known as a young musician who participated in a professional chamber music concert with a top-level chamber music ensemble. This recognition will tremendously impact your college, festivals, summer schools, professional programs, and financial aid applications everywhere. The real value of this program exceeds its monetary value many times.
About the Age Categories
We have created age categories to help us organize the applications and distinguish between high school participants, 15-17 years old, and college-age, 18-21 years old. Every applicant should check the category box that is closest to their age. When applying with an ensemble, participants should check the box that represents the category for which the ensemble is applying. The age category for the ensembles is determined by the average age calculated among the ensemble members.
About the Geographic Areas
The geographic areas are indicated mainly for informational purposes. However, it will also help us determine the level of housing and transportation assistance some applicants might need. We will do our best to provide housing for selected participants whose travel time from home to Syracuse exceeds two hours. To help you decide which box on the application form to check, here is the division of the areas by counties:
About the Application Process
You can expect several highly beneficial things when you apply for the Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo Intensive Chamber Music Program 2024. The application process is not just a formality but a unique learning opportunity. It's a chance for you to delve into your relationship with chamber music and your fellow musicians. You'll be encouraged to submit your best chamber music recording, whether a new one created for this program or an older one showcasing your enduring passion for chamber music.
The application process encompasses several elements:
Once you've submitted your application and paid the fee (which is your only expense for this program), you can anticipate one of three outcomes:
When you apply as an ensemble, one more remote possibility exists. We might detect exceptional talent within the ensemble, which we won't be able to accept as a group. In this case, we would like to extend the program participation invitation to that particular member or those particular members. We know this is an extreme measure, but we hope the other members will recognize the contribution those selected members provide to their ensemble and be happy for them. We also hope this will serve as an inspiration for the ensemble to continue to grow.
About the Videos
You will have to submit two videos. Ensembles must submit one video with the ensemble's performance and one from the most recent rehearsal. Individual applicants must submit one video from their most recent solo performance and one from any chamber music performance in which they actively participated. The videos will be evaluated for their content and for their quality. Make sure you select the best recordings of your best performances. The setting, picture, and sound quality of your videos WILL play a significant role in the decision process. You should submit high-quality recordings that showcase your talent, seriousness, dedication, and love for chamber music.
About the Application Fees
All applicants, whether applying with an ensemble or as an individual performer, must pay the application fee. The members of trios and larger ensembles must pay the application fee of $45.00. Individual performers and both members of duos must pay the application fee of $55.00. Ensembles may submit the applications of all their members in one envelope. If they decide to do so, they can also submit one check covering the application fees for all ensemble members.
The application fee must be accurate; otherwise, the application will not be processed. If there is a discrepancy with the application fee(s), we'll let you know and offer a solution. Please note that application fees are, under any circumstances, nonrefundable.
About the Contract
All accepted participants will receive "services" with real monetary value, and after the final performance, each participant will receive a financial reward. Accepting the invitation to participate represents a legal contract with binding obligations. Each accepted participant will receive an actual contract with the acceptance letter, which they must sign and return by the deadline. The primary condition of the agreement will stipulate that each accepted participant must behave professionally and make maximum effort to make the final concert a great success.
About the Content of the Program
Once we accept you and you sign the contract, you will play a vital role in the success of the final concert as an active participant. You'll have a guided professional experience putting together and materializing a top-level chamber music event. You'll participate in at least three high-octane rehearsals, one top-level masterclass, and a high-profile final concert. You'll also actively participate in scheduling and running the rehearsals. To ensure your exceptional learning experience, you'll be guided and taught essential steps throughout the process.
About the Instruments & Ensembles
This year, we are opening, but not limiting, the program to the following groups:
When accepted as an ensemble, you will bring the most valuable asset to the program — the experience of cooperation and unique chemistry. In this program, you will learn how to share this and utilize it to the fullest in a very short time.
In our Intensive Chamber Music Program, all ensembles and individual performers will be placed into newly formed ensembles with the members of Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo. For example, if you apply and are accepted as a string quartet, a minor surgical change might be made by adding Dr. Roman Placzek, the cellist of the Duo, to your ensemble, and you will work and perform a movement or two from Schubert's cello quintet. In another example, if you are an exceptional flute player or a violinist, violist, or double-base player, you will join the Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo and perform a trio, quartet, or quintet with them. Suppose your ensemble is genuinely exceptional, and we have a great individual participant who would be a good fit. In that case, we might fit them into your group and create a temporary super-ensemble, which we will coach. Do you feel your group is too precious to be disassembled and redistributed? Then, do not fear. If we are impressed by the maturity and uniqueness of an accepted ensemble, we might leave it alone, coach it for FREE, and let it perform as an original group for MONEY.
In any case, we will make all our decisions as your trusted, more experienced colleagues, and we will discuss everything together before we make a final decision. In ICMP 2024, you are in charge of your own unique experience.
About the Repertoire
The final repertoire for each ensemble will be decided once the ensembles are formed. All members of every ensemble will have the opportunity to suggest a piece they would love to play. The organizers will make the final decision. Because of the nature of the program, we will concentrate on traditional chamber music repertoire. The only exception will be newly composed pieces by young composers whose compositions will be accepted under the program "Call for Chamber Music Compositions Submissions 2024." Under this program, supported by another grant from CNY Arts, the participants of the Intensive Chamber Music Program 2024 and members of the Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo will perform one piece composed by composers from historically underrepresented communities and one piece reflecting on discrimination, inequality, oppression, diversity, equity and inclusion by the young composers of any background.
About the Public Participation
All the events of this program are open to the public. The rehearsals may take place in smaller spaces where we can expect a smaller audience; however, because of the grant we received from CNY Arts to support this program, all events must be open to the public.

- One masterclass valued at $500.00.
- Monetary reward of at least $150.00 for each active participant. (The amount of the monetary reward may increase. The stated amount is the minimum cash reward every accepted participant who fulfills the conditions of the agreement will receive.)
