Reaching Out to Young Musicians
Through Extraordinary Chamber Music Experience
Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo received two grants from CNY Arts for the fiscal year 2024. Instead of using the grants to fund themselves, the members of the Duo decided to create a pilot chamber music program. The ensemble's goal is to use this program to lay the foundation for the new Chamber Music Institute for young musicians. Each program supported by a specific grant has a particular designation aiming at promoting chamber music among young musicians. One offers an extraordinary opportunity to participate in the top-level chamber music learning and performing experience, and the other provides a unique opportunity for young composers to express their knowledge or understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion by composing a chamber music piece. Both programs will culminate in a final concert where selected performers and composers present their artistry and talent.
Even though our company and these two programs are brand new, the members of Nezhdanova-Placzek Duo - Dr. Roman Placzek and Dr. Elena Nezhdanova - are experienced and successful organizers of similar programs. Until their resignation in 2019, they ran the North Carolina Bach Festival, which they saved from closure, helped to restore its non-profit status, and resurrected to a new glory and prominence. Dr. Elena Nezhdanova was the director of the NC Bach Festival Youth Program, which she brought up to unparalleled heights. As Executive Director and Board President, Dr. Placzek expanded the reach and scope of the festival beyond the one-city event, bringing the festival events to other North Carolina cities and thus grasping the attention of the whole state and beyond. Before that, Roman designed, founded, and ran a famous international chamber music festival called Golden Mountain Summer in Zlaté Hory, Czech Republic. There, he brought together top-level performing artists to coach and teach international students from several countries.

Now, the members of the excellent chamber music ensemble praised by audiences and critics alike for its remarkable ensemble playing, sensitivity, and beauty of its performances share the grants they could use just for themselves with the young generation of chamber musicians in the hope of sharing their art, knowledge, and passion for genuine music making.
