Clefi’s Music Notebook 1

Clefi's Music Notebooks 1 - 4 are full-color music books created for elementary and middle school students, music schools, private music studios, and individual learners. The core Notebooks are part of the series created by the esteemed Czech music educator and celebrated bassist Dr. Eva Sasinkova. The workbooks are beautifully illustrated by Czech artist Kateřina Kovářová, M.A., and Dr. Roman Placzek, a respected Czech-American cellist, educator, composer, and publisher, who skillfully translated and adapted the content for English-speaking audiences.

If not for their professionally crafted content and appealing illustrations, they would stand out even more due to their unique concept. As a series, all four volumes together offer a thorough overview of musical notation and basic music theory with examples of real-world applications. Each volume brings aspiring musicians closer to exploring the exciting world of music, while the four volumes are smoothly connected, helping students build essential musical skills in an enjoyable, friendly way. In the first part of Clefi’s Music Notebook 1, where all the exciting knowledge is presented on colorful pages accompanied by playful illustrations inspired by music-loving sea creatures, aspiring musicians review the fundamentals of music introduced in "Clefi’s Little Notebook.” Next, we revisit the musical alphabet, notes, and rests; expand our understanding of the third and fourth octaves; delve into the fifth octave; enhance our knowledge of the bass clef; and uncover more interesting facts about accidentals. After that, our readers will learn about intervals within the major scale and explore how to create scales with sharps. They will also become familiar with the major fifth chord. Then, we move on to exploring different time signatures, practicing rhythms, and expanding their knowledge of various notation symbols, including dotted notes and rests. The final chapters of the Notebook explain lowered tones, flats, and how to build major scales using flats. As an interesting fact from music theory, we share a fascinating story about the mysterious tone “H.”
